History of anthropology as an anthropological problem

The history of anthropology is a rapidly growing sub-field of our discipline, one that inevitably attracts strong views. Yet, if conclusions are drawn too hastily, this can contradict what we know about anthropologists and their lives, resulting in what Regna Darnell once called “assassination by anachronism.” In this talk, I will point at some questions that we should take into consideration, especially given the fact that history of anthropology is likely to remain at the heart of our thinking going forward.

Aleksandar Bošković has Diploma in Philosophy, University of Belgrade (Serbia), M.A. in Anthropology, Tulane University, New Orleans, LA (USA), Ph.D. in Social Anthropology, University of St. Andrews (Scotland, UK), and is Fellow of the RAI. He is Senior Research Scientist at the Institute of Archaeology in Belgrade and (from 2023) Professor of Social Anthropology at the UFRN, Natal (Brazil). He previously taught at the Jagiellonian University, Cracow (Poland), University of Belgrade; Faculty of Applied Sciences, UDG (Montenegro), Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana (Slovenia); University of Brasília (Brazil); Rhodes University in Grahamstown (South Africa); University of the Witwatersrand (Johannesburg, South Africa); and University of St. Andrews. He is the author or editor of nineteen books, including William Robertson Smith (Berghahn, 2021), Mesoamerican Religions and Archaeology (Archaeopress, 2017), African Political Systems Revisited (Berghahn, 2022 – co-editor, with Günther Schlee), Other People’s Anthropologies (Berghahn, 2008), and The Anthropological Field on the Margins of Europe (LIT Verlag, 2013 – co-editor, with Chris Hann). He has published in American Anthropologist, Anthropos, Ethnos, Zeitschrif für Ethnologie, and other journals. Bošković is the editor of Berghahn’s Anthropology’s Ancestors series, as well as co-editor of the Anthropological Journal of European Cultures (AJEC).
