Cultural Expertise in Europe:
Theory, Ethics, and Practices

Livia Holden (Principal Investigator at CULTEXP and EURO-EXPERT – ERC funded projects; CNRS, University of Panthéon Sorbonne Paris 1)

Cultural expertise has emerged as a comprehensive theoretical framework that accounts for a variety of involvements of social scientists, especially anthropologists, in the legal arenas. At the core of the concept of cultural expertise are the ethical engagement and responsible positioning of social scientists but also the development of guidelines and best practices. In this talk I will propose a short genesis of the theoretical framework of cultural expertise which will be followed by the overview of the ethics and positioning of cultural experts, and the formats of cultural expertise in the United Kingdom, France, and Italy. The talk will conclude with considerations about the perceptions of usefulness of cultural expertise in Europe.
