RAI RESEARCH SEMINAR

SEMINAR SERIES AT THE ROYAL ANTHROPOLOGICAL INSTITUTE

The Choreographing Brain:  Cognition, Emotion, and Dance

Dr Judith Lynne Hanna, Affiliate Research Professor, Department of Anthropology, University of Maryland, USA

Wednesday 10 February at 5.30 pm

Recent technological advances in neuroscience are unraveling secrets about the cognitive, emotional, and exercise power of dance.  Hidden from our sight, the mysterious brain choreographs the operations underlying the complex feat of multi-sensory dance language for, dance-maker, dancer, and dance-viewer. Dance shares places and processes in the brain for verbal language and thus can powerfully communicate ideas and feelings. Moreover, dance sparks new brain cells, their interconnections, and neural plasticity--the brain’s amazing abil¬ity to change and help its owner through¬out life. Besides, dance helps us to reduce, resist and escape stress that interferes with the acquisition of all kinds of knowledge and good health.
