Behind the Screen–World: Visualizing Markets & Hacking Finance

7th November 2015
10.00-17.00
Open University Campus, Camden http://www3.open.ac.uk/contact//maps.aspx?contactid=1 (Room 2).

Building on the Royal Anthropological Institute and London School of Financial Arts’ 25th April 2015 symposium on Mapping High Finance, this one–day design workshop will begin with by introducing participants to academic work produced by sociologists, geographers and anthropologists who have explored the role that visualizations of financial markets play in enabling and shaping financial activity. Drawing this academic knowledge into dialogue with the work of artists who have attempted to ‘hack’ financial infostructures and reveal the legal and material relationships that lie behind the ‘screen–worlds’ with which traders and market analysts engage in their daily practice, the second half of the workshop will encourage participants to draw on artistic, journalistic and technical repertoires to design and prototype forms of market visualization that might disrupt conventional financial market activity. How can the geographical and social ‘externalities’ typically erased from market visualizations be incorporated into financial screen–worlds? What kind of information sources might be required to create open and democratized market visualizations? How might activist visualizations of markets be put to use?

This event is free but registration is required. To register please email p.gilbert@sussex.ac.uk
