Abstract:

Sound moves through all human cultures and all possible social spaces, resonating with creative, ethical and political potentials. Should it be captured? What are our future sound communities? Are anthropologists, curators and sonic artists engaging with its organic, physical and social properties?

How is sound exhibited, created and experienced? What can be communicated within and beyond archive and gallery walls through this most fluid and elusive medium? What human stories can be told when a hundred years of recorded heritage is released from shelves and media files, and re-circulated among communities?

In this lecture I trace a series of sound stories from the rainforests of the Central African Republic, to the taxis and townships of South Africa; from urban nightclubs to global art galleries and museums; from archive shelves back into everyday life. I illustrate the possibilities of human understanding that come from feeling sound as experience more than medium or object.
