The Letters Writ by a Turkish Spy, its influence on literature and on my work

Letters Writ by a Turkish Spy, is a literary mystery. The hero, whose identity is the central riddle of the book, writes letters to his long-lost lover in an attempt to regain her affection. In the letters, he tells her the story of a priceless manuscript - hidden for centuries by the descendants of a pirate on the Outer Banks of South Carolina– that is to be auctioned in New York. It was written by a Turkish spy in Paris in the 17th century. The reappearance of the manuscript provokes a frenzy of scheming. The secret that the manuscript contains would up-end history. The Turkish ambassador demands the letters back as part of the country’s heritage; a wealthy connoisseur plots to turn a quick profit; an academic struggles to suppress them to save his reputation. On the eve of the sale, the manuscript disappears. Behind the scenes, a shadowy secret agent manipulates a journalist for his own ends until the mystery is solved - and the hero’s identity revealed.
