RAI RESEARCH SEMINAR

SEMINAR SERIES AT THE ROYAL ANTHROPOLOGICAL INSTITUTE

Marathon Music: Soundscapes of Running

Dr Fred Moehn, King’s College London

Wednesday 2 May at 5.30 pm

In this lecture I present material from my ongoing research into the topic of running, music, and sound. I start by considering how music is mapped onto ‘the race experience’, examining also some of the practical dimensions of such occasions. I then discuss how run cadence and musical beat can be connected, with a glance at the phenomenon of the run playlist, and at mobile phone apps that emphasize this connection. Finally, I touch on recent discussions about the ‘quantified self’ and how this pertains to emergent ideas about personal health. Key themes in this research include ecologies of listening, soundscapes, movement, and self-improvement. I will also briefly introduce some of the methodological issues the project poses.
