4th Folklore Society – Royal Anthropological Institute Joint Seminar

Anthropology and Folklore in Conversation: Revisiting Frazer, Lang, and Tylor

Thursday 25 October 2018 at 10.00am to 5.00pm

Call for Papers

For the fourth of the highly successful one-day events devoted to examining the complementarities between anthropology and folklore, we invite papers concerning three famous figures in particular: Frazer, Lang and Tylor. All three are writers whose shadows,  in one way or another,  remain over both fields.   This seminar will explore what that heritage is, and how later scholars have come to terms with it.

Though papers on these three scholars and their impact are particularly welcome, it goes without saying that we realise that even these highly distinguished and original writers worked within a network of scholarship, and papers concerning other figures of their time are also welcome. Ultimately, we hope that the day, as well as being an enjoyable exploration in itself, will enable us to understand better the different, overlapping currents of scholarship at the time, and the way that we react to them today.

Anyone wishing to submit a proposal should write a 300-word abstract including paper title,  author’s name and contact details.  The proposal should be submitted to by Friday 13 July, 2018 by 5 PM. Paper proposers will be notified by the end of July if their proposal has been accepted.

There is no conference fee, and refreshments will be provided on the day, but tickets must be booked. To book tickets please go to
