The RAI’s Ethnomusicology and Ethnochoreology Committee was established in March 2013 by current Chair Professor John Baily (Goldsmiths, University of London), and includes specialists drawn from anthropology and music departments across the UK. The present-day committee succeeds the original Ethnomusicology Committee (1953-63) and subsequent Ethnomusicology Panel (1963-1974).
The committee aims to promote ethnomusicology and ethnochoreology within the RAI and throughout university departments, as well as to a wider public outside of academia. Since it’s re-inception, the committee had organised a series of research seminars and inaugurated performance-led ‘Music at the RAI’ sessions, coordinated a one-day conference at the Horniman Museum (‘Musical Instruments and Material Culture), and has instituted an annual ‘RAI Blacking Lecture’, named in honour of esteemed ethnomusicologist and member of the original committee John Blacking (1928-1990). The committee continues to liaise with a number of similar institutions, including the BFE (British Forum for Ethnomusicology) and ICTM (International Council for Traditional Music).
