The library of Sir Richard Burton was offered to the Royal Anthropological Institute by the Royal Borough of Kensington in 1954 and accepted by the Royal Anthropological Institute 10 March 1955. The library was sold to the Christensen Fund in 1986 and deposited on permanent loan with the Huntington Library, San Marino, California. See also A103, A114/13/1/12

Burton, 30 Nov 1874 - no one real individual holds real power in Somauli land; some tribes have Akils to whom they pay more or less regard; no quarantine in Somal and no plague in Arabia; Egyptians in occupation of Berberah, not acknowledged by the British and may be abandoned; inadvisable for an Englishman to travel in Somauli Country. 1 p. 27 x 20.5 cm

/4 H.F. McKillop to R. Burton, off Malta, 7 July 1876 - has sent notes to England about first expedition to Berbera and will meet RB in London when he finds them; first visit in Feb. 1974 to improve it as a port of call and as a coaling and provisioning station; to advise Egyptian government on expenditure for this purpose; took borings for a jetty and established water supply; Burton’s book provided invaluable accurate information and shortened work; Berbera offers more advantages for ships than Aden; other sources of water than Aubar; unlimited supply of cattle and sheep; better climate; opposition from some tribes but Police Jurisdiction could be applied; blackmail by the Easa Maussa not permitted; Easa Maussa stole 300 sheep from other tribes which lead to fighting which was stopped by McKillop and 4 others on horses waving umbrellas and chasing them; his interpreter threatened thunder and lightning; will write from London. 3 pp. 27 x 21.5 cm

Burton, 17 ? 1877 - sending proofs of RB article; would like RB to come to Cairo and discusses accommodation; has not been paid by Société; discusses articles in Egyptian Monitor; Gordon going to McKillop; thanks for RB advice on book; letter from Alfred Marche on expedition to River Ivindo to Doume, up River Thibe by pirogue with Brazza and Belay ill; Schweinfurth in Cairo; Doctor Long in Doumé. 4 pp.

Burton, 14 Sep 1879 - has MS on Iuba and happy to give aid; would like to go but cannot abandon office worth $4000 per year; has written to friend at Soc.G. de Paris; offered a steamer by Seyd?; regrets not accepting the Sultanate of the Isles Comoros and Jabanne? near Madagascar; Grand Vizir and Sultan approached Long’s camp mouth of Iuba River and offered to take islands with 100 men; Ismail Khedive wrote flattering letters; sent Sultan to Cairo who gave presents to the Khedive and still in palace in Cairo; officers with him urged him to accept the raid; did he make the wrong decision?; write and let him know what Burton thinks; has received reply from Sir B. Alcock about changing name of lake; not fault of Geogr. Soc. but Gordon’s doing; Gordon caused tribal strife, retired to Khartoum, and no facts added to geography; mysteries of Nile inundation should be explored. 4 pp. 19.5 x 12 cm
