At its Council meeting on 15 Dec. 1863, the Anthropological Society resolved to constitute a Committee 'to arrange a Dinner of the Society' (see Council minutes, A3:1, f. 41). The dinner took place on 3 Jan. 1864 at its Anniversary Meeting (A8, Supplement 2/12) and appears to have been an annual event since subsequent dinners were held on 2 Jan. 1866 and 1 Jan. 1867 (A8, Supplement 2/14, 25) with C. Carter Blake as Secretary of the Dinner Committee for the latter; wine merchants bills are held for 2 Feb. and 14 June 1866 (A7, ff. 125, 152). The Council meeting of 5 Jan. 1869 'Resolved that the Annual Dinner of the Fellows and their friends be announced in the General Circular and at the Evening Meetings...' (A3:1, f, 387). In addition to these annual dinners, the Anthropological Society hosted a Public Farewell Dinner to Capt. R.F. Burton, Vice-President on 4 Apr. 1865 at St. James's Hall before his departure to Santos, Brazil as Consul.

The dining club, The Cannibals, does not appear to have been associated with the Dinner Committee but as Sir Arthur Keith records in his Presidential Address of 1917, he was informed by Sir Edward Brabrook that 'Anthropological Society members dined together before the evening meeting' and that it 'flourished at least as long ago as 1868' (JRAI, Vol. 47, 1917, p. 20). Sir Edward Brabrook joined the Society in 1864 as Director. It met at Bertolini's near Leicester Square. A.C. Swinburne and Richard Monkton Milnes, Lord Houghton were members, the former writing a poem, 'The Cannibals Catechism' which was printed for private circulation. Byron Farwell records that the Club was dissolved in early 1869 and that Burton tried to revive it in Feb. 1871 when it met once more (see his Burton, 1963, p. 300). It seems as if the Club did not continue after the amalgamation of the Anthropological Society and the Ethnological Society to form the [R]AI in 1871. No records are held until 1921. It then continued to meet until 10 Nov. 1939 (for lunch) and as a lunch club during the 1939-45 war. It was reconstituted as the Dining Club or Long Pig Club on 23 Oct. 1952 at the Nag's Head, Floral Street, Covent Garden. The speaker at the regular RAI lecture meetings was the guest of honour at the Club dinners as were the Huxley and Henry Myers Lecturers. On 17 July 1956 the Club spent some of its balance on a strawberry tea for the Officers and staff; in the same year it also met the expenses of the Garden Party. The Club's last dinner was on 3 June 1965 at the Universal Restaurant. Sir Hercules Read appears to have been Secretary-Treasurer before 1914; W.B. Fagg held that position in 1939 and through World War II. Miss M.L. Tildesley took over the reconstituted Club from Oct. 1952-Nov. 1957, Miss M.A. Bennet-Clark (Mrs Carey), Nov. 1957-Oct. 1959 when W.B. Fagg took over until the last dinner in 1965.

The Garden Party was held annually in Bedford Square Gardens after the Annual General Meeting and Presidential Address from 26 Aug. 1952 until the late 1960's. After the departure from Bedford Square in 1971, a Garden Party was due to be held in Gordon Square in 1977 through the courtesy of the Institute of Archaeology; unfortunately heavy rain interfered with the event.

The Sherry Club was established by Council (see CM/87/2, Minute 12, 7 Nov. 1957) and held its first meeting on 5 Dec. 1957 with Miss M.L. Tildesley as Secretary-Treasurer. Its purpose was to provide 'more opportunities for social contact among Fellows and Associate members'; it met in the Reading Room after lecture meetings. It was closed in 1963 owing to the varying times of the RAI lectures and the difficulty of arranging the meetings.
