Athens is an access management system that provides remote access to the online databases and journals subscribed to by the RAI and the British Museum. This service is available for RAI Fellows. To have an Athens account set up, please email the Membership Manager for details.

After registration you will be issued with an Athens username and password that can be used to log in to MyAthens to see all the available online resources which include:-

  • Encyclopaedia Britannica Online (Academic Edition). Provides the complete text of Encyclopaedia Britannica with search capabilities, related links and multimedia enhancements. Includes more than 120,000 articles, a world atlas, thousands of images and videos, an online dictionary and thesaurus and over 300,000 articles from respected magazines and journals.
  • JSTOR. JSTOR includes archives (excluding the last 5 years) of over one thousand leading academic journals across the humanities, social sciences and sciences, as well as select monographs and other materials valuable for academic work. The entire corpus is full-text searchable, offers search term highlighting, includes high-quality images and is interlinked by millions of citations and references.
  • Oxford Art Online. Oxford Art Online is a gateway that offers users the ability to access and search the vast content of Grove Art Online and Oxford art reference works in one location. Grove Art Online contains more than 23,000 subject entries, 21,000 biographies, 500,000 bibliographic citations, 40,000 image links and 5,000 images. The Oxford Companion to Western Art contains more than 2,600 entries and provides coverage of over 1,700 artists and their work. The Encyclopaedia of Aesthetics features more than 600 articles by more than 500 globally recognised art historians, philosophers and theorists, while the Concise Oxford Dictionary of Art Terms provides 1,800 entries on art terms, critical periods and styles in the visual arts.
  • Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (ODNB). The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (ODNB) provides 56,646 biographies of people who shaped the history of the British Isles and beyond, from the earliest times to the year 2004. You can search, browse, or explore themed essays.
  • Oxford English Dictionary (OED). The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) is an authoritative guide to the meaning, history and pronunciation of over half a million words, both present and past. It also offers the best in etymological analysis, lists variant spellings and shows pronunciation using the International Phonetic Alphabet.
  • Oxford Reference Online (Premium Collection). Oxford Reference Online (Premium Collection) offers over 175 fully-indexed, cross-searchable dictionary, language reference and subject reference works published by Oxford University Press, including detailed information across a broad subject range from titles in the Oxford Companions Series.
  • The Times Digital Archive, 1785-1985. The Times Digital Archive is a full-image online archive of every page published by The Times [London] from 1785-1985. Users can search the full-text of the entire newspaper including news articles, obituaries, advertising and classifieds.
