The RAI Photo Library adheres to the following guidelines which are issued to users, and which help define policy:

1. The RAI exists to foster cross-cultural understanding and the appreciation of anthropological insight.

2. The RAI Photo Collection operates within this general rubric.

3. The Photo Collection exists to support researchers and other users in the understanding and analysis of cultural behaviour and the history and role of anthropology.

4. Users consulting and/or reproducing images in the collection are expected to respect the values of the lifeworlds documented in the images and to use them in accordance with any guidelines that may be specified by the Photo Curator and/or the Photo Committee.
