CASE STUDIES OF THE USE,
CREATION AND MANAGEMENT
OF INFORMATION RESOURCES
IN THE RESEARCH PROCESS
CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST
The Research Information Network (RIN) is looking to fund a series of case studies which will provide a detailed analysis of the way that researchers use, create and manage their information resources. The RIN is making available up to £150,000 for this project, which is intended to run from September 2008 to July 2009.
The RIN was set up in 2005 and is funded by a consortium made up of the four UK Funding Councils, the seven Research Councils and the three National Libraries. Its role is to undertake evidence-based research into information and data issues that relate to professional researchers – and particularly academic researchers – and to develop policy, guidance and advocacy on that basis.
The proposed case studies are an important part of that work, and will provide much-needed evidence in the context of a rapidly-changing information environment. Their overall aim is:
■ to develop an in-depth understanding of researchers’ approaches, in a selected range of subjects, disciplines and research contexts, to discovering, accessing, analysing, managing, creating, refining and disseminating information resources;
■ to identify, on the basis of that evidence, barriers to enhancements in performance and ways in which information policies and services for the support of research might be improved.
On that basis, the studies will suggest means of improving the information policies, strategies and services of a range of relevant players, including research funders, higher education institutions, libraries, publishers and other service providers.
The case studies will focus on the behaviours and needs of researchers working on current and recently-completed projects in three subject or disciplinary areas, to be determined. As such, they will call for significant expertise in observational methodologies, as well as ability to draw evidence using a variety of investigative techniques.
Following the outcome of this call, the RIN will issue an invitation to tender to those who have expressed an interest. A full project specification and tendering requirements will be issued at that time.
The deadline for responses to this call is Friday 20 June. Responses
or enquiries should be directed to stephane.goldstein@rin.ac.uk.
