The Royal Anthropological Institute Collection

Photographic, film and textual resources in anthropology

The RAI Collection comprises the RAI's manuscript, archive, photographic and film holdings, now brought together to form a unique integrated resource.

The Collection is currently housed at the RAI offices, 50 Fitzroy St, London W1T 5 BT. It may be used for study and research; and for responsible commercial use subject to RAI approval. The RAI's rich holdings of archival and photographic material may be consulted; and ethnographic videos from the Institute's extensive collection may be previewed on site.

Access to The Collection is by appointment only, and is free of charge for Fellows, Members and Student Associates of the RAI, and for undergraduate students of anthropology or related degree courses. For all other users for private research an access fee of £10 per day or part-day is charged. Commercial users pay a fee of £40 per day or part-day. Additional charges are made for photocopying where permitted, and for curatorial assistance at an hourly rate. Access fees are waived for users who join the RAI on the spot. All visits are supervised by RAI staff.

Opening hours by appointment:
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 10.00-1.00 and 2.00-5.00. Please note that the study room may be in use by other researchers or for small meetings. All visitors will be required to register and produce identification. Users may be asked to show books, folders etc for inspection when leaving. We regret that there is no wheelchair access to The Collection. Visitors with special needs are asked to contact the RAI Office Manager, who will make special arrangements where possible.

Special events on aspects of The Collection will be organised from time to time. These will be publicised in Anthropology Today and on the website; for details click here.
